Sources of Inteference for DAB Car Radio

It is well known that the worst reception you are going to get is in a well built up area, you don’t get the multipath problem with DAB but buildings can block the signal. I am not 100 percent sure when the test was actually done but one of the promises made a couple of years ago was that the DAB signal strength would be increased. An increased signal strength will make it much easier for the DAB signal to overcome extraneous interference.

Another Possible Source of bother for DAB Car Radio

One other possible source of interference could be PLT (Power Line transmissions) This is where radio or broadband signals are transmitted over power lines and has been shown to cause a DAB signal to drop. In FM Radio it manifests itself as a popping or tearing sound depending on whether the transmission is active or idling. OFCOM have carried out their own tests into the interference and published a study which shows that some devices using this technology create interference above EU acceptable levels, but have said that there is nothing they can do about it and even if there was they wouldn’t. The Civil Aviation Authority is concerned about possible future problems. This surely will be looked into in more detail before it can become a real problem.
